Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2008/05/21/Iqbal_Quadir_How_Technology_Is_Empowering_the_Poor

MIT business professor Iqbal Quadir debunks misconceptions about poverty-stricken countries, and argues that adoption of new technologies can help alleviate conditions in these areas.

-----

Iqbal Quadir on "How Technology Is Empowering the Poor."
Quadir presented a broad outline of development in order to give context for his belief that technology can alleviate poverty.

He reminded us that 500 years ago, when the western countries were still "developing" their own societies, their political systems were no better, and often worse, than the instable corrupt regimes of many developing countries today.

England had a series of kings who were impeached, arrested, ousted, or beheaded for their crimes. It was only after citizens were empowered by economic markets did the balance of power shift from the central king to decentralized citizens.

All steps that devolve power away from a central authority - including laws, trade, and education - will raise democracy.

In Quadir's view, it's not that centralization per se creates poverty. Poverty is the natural beginning state of all societies, east or west. Rather, decentralization is the engine which removes poverty and brings wealth.

To the degree that infrastructure, education, and trade can be decentralized, wealth will rise in proportion. To the degree that infrastructure, education and trade are centralized, poverty will remain - The Long Now Foundation

Iqbal Z. Quadir, founder of Gonofone and GrameenPhone, is the founder and director of the Legatum Center for Development and Entrepreneurship at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the founding co-editor of Innovations: Technology, Governance, Globalization, a journal published by MIT Press.

Middle East Forum Director Daniel Pipes criticizes the role of Sharia Law in many radical Islamic movements, identifying this concept as one of the greatest obstacles to democratic reforms in Muslim societies.

-----

In Islam, Allah is the ultimate authority. In democracy, authority ultimately lies with the people. But does this mean that Islam is incompatible with democracy?

After all, it was Islamic scholarship that introduced ancient Greek conceptions of democracy to the feudal states of Europe.

Despite this, it has been suggested that the differences between Islam (especially when given political form) and the liberal democracies of the West are so great as to represent a 'clash of civilisations'.

But is this so? Is an approach in which society is ordered according the will of God compatible with one in which the will of the people reigns supreme? - Intelligence Squared Australia

Daniel Pipes is director of the Middle East Forum and a prize-winning columnist who writes for the New York Times Syndicate. His website, DanielPipes.org, is one of the most accessed internet sources of specialized information on the Middle East and Islam.

Pipes received his AB (1971) and PhD (1978) in History from Harvard University and spent six years studying abroad, including three years in Egypt. Mr Pipes speaks French and reads Arabic and German. He has taught at the University of Chicago, Harvard University, the US Naval War College, and Pepperdine University. Pipes also served in various capacities in the US Government, including two presidentially-appointed positions: vice chairman of the Fulbright Board of Foreign Scholarships and member of the board of the US Institute of Peace. Born in Mumbai, India, Salman Rushdie is an outspoken novelist. After a decade working as an ad copywriter, Rushdie had a breakthrough with the publication of his second book, Midnight's Children. The book received critical acclaim and was awarded the Booker Prize in 1981.

His latest novel, The Enchantress of Florence, about a bewitching Moghul princess and her Florentine exploits with such historical characters as Machiavelli, is due out this June - City Arts and Lectures

Sir Ahmed Salman Rushdie is an Indian-British novelist and essayist. He first achieved fame with his second novel, Midnight's Children (1981), which won the Booker Prize.Much of his early fiction is set at least partly on the Indian subcontinent. His style is often classified as magical realism, while a dominant theme of his work is the story of the many connections, disruptions, and migrations between the Eastern and Western worlds.

His fourth novel, The Satanic Verses (1988), led to protests from Muslims in several countries, some of which were violent. Faced with death threats and a fatwā (religious edict) issued by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then Supreme Leader of Iran, which called for him to be killed, he spent nearly a decade largely underground, appearing in public only sporadically.

In June 2007, Rushdie was appointed a Knight Bachelor for services to literature. In 2007, he began a five-year term as distinguished writer in residence at Emory University.

UC Berkeley Professor George Lakoff discusses concepts from his new book, The Political Mind: Why You Can't Understand 21st-Century American Politics with an 18th-Century Brain.

George P. Lakoff is a professor of linguistics (in particular, cognitive linguistics) at the University of California, Berkeley, where he has taught since 1972.
Although some of his research involves questions traditionally pursued by linguists, such as the conditions under which a certain linguistic construction is grammatically viable, he is most famous for his ideas about the centrality of metaphor to human thinking, political behavior and society.

He is particularly famous for his concept of the "embodied mind" which he has written about in relation to mathematics. In recent years he has applied his work to the realm of politics, and founded a progressive think tank, the Rockridge Institute.

"Insomniac" author Gayle Greene discusses the many negative mental and physiological effects of sleep deprivation.

-----

Gayle Greene discusses her book Insomniac.

Part memoir, part scientific reportage and analysis, a book for all of us who wish to know more about sleep, the condition which consumes one third of our lives. Greene - a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the patient representative on the board of the American Insomnia Association - addresses head on the neglect of this disorder that affects millions.

Herself an insomniac, she weaves together the story of her personal journey through a lifetime of sleepless nights; the experiences of other insomniacs; an in-depth study of sleep science and current research; and a detailed examination of what can be done to help those afflicted. You might call her work, as she notes, "a field guide to insomnia".

Billy Collins writes, "The good news is that Greene's book is all you ever need to read on the subject." Green is a professor of literature and women's studies at Scripps College - Cody's Books

Gayle Green has published dozens of articles in scholarly journals such as Signs, Contemporary Literature, and Renaissance Drama, many of which have been reprinted in anthologies (e.g., Blackwell¹s Shakespeare: An Anthology of Criticism and Theory, 1945-2000,2004). She's also published in more popular venues such as Ms Magazine, The Nation, The Women's Review of Books, and In These Times.

She's a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, a professional medical society for researchers and clinicians, and a board member and the patient representative of the American Insomnia Association, an organization within the American Academic of Sleep Medicine.
