So long as we have mobile technology, we have to be concerned with batteries. Researchers at NTT DoCoMo have completed development of an intelligent lithium-ion battery that monitors its own health (and charge status) and assembles reports that are accessible by users.

How is this possible you ask? Why through a digital brain of course. Each unit would contain an embedded 8-bit microcomputer inside the battery itself that records and stores the data. The information can then be called up to the handset by the user to see how the battery's feeling (and whether or not it's time for repaire or replacement).

Maybe you're saying to yourself "big deal, my phone does that now". Here's the real benefit to the smart battery- The information stays with the battery and not the handset, wgich means even if it is swapped out into another phone, the information will still be available.

NTT DoCoMo says the batteries will be ready for phones next year. For more details, click here.

While the concept of watching television on today's handsets is nothing new thanks to wireless web and streaming video apps, WRAL and CBS are testing a new mobile digital TV technology that can potentially turn a cell phone into a literal mobile television set.

This technology would send specially encoded signals to receivers built into devices such as cell phones (and PDAs). The digital waves would be sent over the same signals as local HDTV broadcasts (openly over the air).

The early field tests are currently supported by a number of companies, including Harris Corporation, LG Electronics and Zenith. They, along with WRAL and CBS, are hoping to deploy mobile digital TV as early as next year. This technology would provide access to local digital TV on your handset: A little piece of home even when you are not.

Losing a cell phone sucks. I've been lucky enough to not do it myself, but I know what a pain it can be.

This Mobile Superhero software from YouGetItBack.com helps mitigate some of the pain caused by this. Install the software on your phone. If it is lost or stolen, the phone can be remotely locked from the website. You can also back up your phone contacts to their secure server.

If someone finds the phone, they can use the phone to report it lost or stolen. That's it. The phone is inaccessible. I did find that on a power cycle, the Nokia N95 I was testing with was briefly accessible until the security software activated. However, it's about as locked down as it gets.

Mobile Superhero can be downloaded for free and it supports a number of Blackberry, Nokia, and Samsung handsets. After the 30 day trial, it costs $19.95 a year. You can also opt for physical asset tags for $9.95 that are good for three years, but they do not protect the access to your phone. The tags can be used on any item, though.

Sony, originator of the vastly successful Walkman portable music devices, has resurrected the title for use in their new series of phones intended to do a little bit of everything. Fring on N810

Fring keeps on adding more handsets so you can IM and make VoIP calls from not only mobile phone handsets, but from the Nokia N810 as well! This screenshot was taken from the N810.

The J2ME client doesn't do VoIP, but it still allows you to IM on the various networks it supports, including Skype! In fact, the feature set for all the different versions varies, which is why they provide this handy, dandy chart that shows you what features are supported on which versions.

One other notable feature is that Fring will allow you to make PSTN calls using your Skype Out minutes. I made a test call from my Nokia N810 and it sounded pretty good.

Several telecom companies met with the FCC last week to voice their disapproval of the FCC's planned auction of wireless space under the condition that the auction winner would use it as free Internet (with porn filters). The companies in question asked the FCC to reconsider this spectrum auction.

AT&T, Motorola, T-Mobile and Texas Instruments were among the companies who expressed concern for the notion. T-Mobile had recently asked the FCC to spend more time testing white spaces stating concern about potential interference.

The specific grievances of the other companies were not made public. The FCC is still weighing when to auction off this new spectrum while simultaneously fielding complaints from current wireless providers. While the most common complaint is the potential for interference, it is quite obvious that companies rightfully fear that they will be unable to compete with the free Internet should they be outbid on the auction block. At present the FCC has not announced any concrete decisions.

With more and more mobile handsets coming equipped with internet browsing capabilities that rival yesteryear's laptop capabilities, the mobile web (scaled down & simplified versions of popular web sites) isn't cutting the proverbial mustard anymore.

Opera Software today released its beta version of its Opera Mobile 9.5 software, which allows users to view entire web pages.

With panning and zooming options, users are able to focus on specific page content. Opera also introduces a new user interface for easier navigation over Opera 8.65.

Not only is Opera Mobile 9.5 contain the most standards-compliant browser available, it allows developers to debug JavaScript, inspect Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and the Document Object Model (DOM), and view any errors, making development for the mobile phone even easier.

The free download can be retrieved here.

The Federal Communications Commission announced the clearance of field-testing prototype TV white-spaces devices, proof that the FCC is looking into opening up more airwaves to Wi-Fi and other unlicensed wireless devices (so long as interference to digital broadcast signals isn't an issue).

Basically in English this means the FCC will sample various signals across TV white spaces to see if devices and services can be used on the empty spectrum between analog TV channels without causing interference. The FCC has already conducted several rounds of testing, most successfully but with a few failures.

If tests continue to be successful the FCC could authorize use of these white spaces for consumer devices in the future; which would essentially revolutionize the wireless industry.

Some call today by its true name, Friday July 11th while others are treating it as an official holiday celebrating the release of the iPhone G3. Unfortunately the custom of this holiday involves waking up early, standing in long lines, and spending a wad of cash (okay so that's no too different from many other holidays).

Here's the bad news for many early adopters: A spokesman for AT&T Inc., the exclusive carrier for the iPhone in the U.S., said there was a global problem with Apple Inc 's iTunes servers that prevented the phones from being fully activated in-store, as had been initially planned.

Instead, employees are telling buyers to go home and perform the last step by connecting their phones to their own computers. When the first iPhone went on sale a year ago, customers performed the whole activation procedure at home, freeing store employees to focus on sales. But the new model is subsidized by carriers, as is standard in the wireless industry, and Apple and AT&T therefore planned to activate all phones in-store to get customers committed to a contract.

Cell phone maker Nokia has announced today that nine more firms, including Telecom have agreed to support its new open mobile software alliance, the Symbian Foundation.
Back in June Nokia announced that it would buy out other shareholders of the UK-based smartphone software maker Symbian (for $410 million) and make all if its software royalty-free to other phone makers.

Initial members to sign on to the concept were AT&T, LG Electronics, Motorola, Nokia, NTT DoCoMo, Samsung Electronics, Sony Ericsson, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone.

This latest news pushes the number up over 30 member companies including: America Movil and TIM, chip firm Marvell, and services and software providers Aplix, Elektrobit, EMCC Software, Sasken and TietoEnator.

The folks at 4iPhone have a hosted Exchange service that gives you full Active Sync and Direct Push to your iPhone, at least once the version 2.0 firmware is available. I suppose that's news in and of itself, but what I find amusing is that they recognize that push email is going to have a huge impact on the iPhone's battery life.

What are they doing about this? They signed up to be resellers of mophie's Juice Pack, which is an iPhone battery-the first to receive the coveted "Works with iPhone" certification from Apple. 4iPhone is selling this battery on their site along with their service-if you want it.

From the press release:

The added "juice" gives consumers up to an additional 250 hours of standby time, 8 hours of talk time, 6 hours of Internet use, 7 hours of video playback, and 24 hours of audio playback. The juice pack™ also integrates a 4 Led 'charge status' indicator and its own 30-pin dock connector, making it incredibly simple to recharge the juice pack™ using standard iPhone accessories.

While the battery idea is nice, the battery currently only works with the first generation iPhones. A version for the new iPhone 3G-which will need it much more than the original-is coming. See full article.

Ok, not quite any mobile, but as long as you have a phone with a web browser, you can have the power of Gizmo5, formerly Gizmo Project, available to you.

Visit giz5.com from your mobile phone and either sign up for a new account or sign in with your existing gizmo5 account. You will have instant access to all your IM buddies from MSN, Yahoo, AIM, Google Talk, and others.

The one thing it doesn't do is automatically refresh the page in a chat session. Certainly possible to do that with the Nokia handsets, but don't know how well it works (or doesn't) for others. See full article.

Sure free wireless sounds like a great concept but T-Mobile wants more time! The company has asked the FCC to delay a vote on final rules for the proposed AWS-3 auction by another three months.

The FCC is currently seeking public comment about another advanced wireless services auction in which the winner would be required to provide open access to a free wireless broadband service that includes filters to block adult content.

T-Mobile says further testing needs to be done to ensure that there is no interference between the proposed spectrum to be auctioned and existing networks. Though FCC Chairman Kevin Martin has met with resistance, he has political backing that may entice him to move forward with the auction's rules as proposed.

A final vote could take place as early as next month. Stay tuned.

If you're like many consumers around the world, you're probably already well aware of the fact that the new iPhone 3G will go on sale at 8 am next Friday (July 11) at AT&T retail shops and Apple stores.

If you're "upgrade eligible" you'll be able to buy the new iPhone for the discounted price of $199 for the 8GB version or $299 for the 16GB model plus an additional $18 upgrade fee. Individuals who are not eligible for the discount will be looking at $399 for the 8GB iPhone 3G or $499 for the 16GB version.

If that sounds pricey to you, wait until you here what customers with a fear of commitment will be looking at: AT&T also says that a no-commitment iPhone 3G will be available soon, at $599 for the 8GB version and or $699 for the 16GB handset. Hey, when you don't want to sign a two-year commitment contract, it's going to cost you. These customers will be basically signing a month-to-month billing agreement. Unfortunately, AT&T doesn't plan on offering the new iPhone on a prepaid basis

Verizon Wireless today introduced Rhapsody's subscription music service, allowing its customers to download as much music as they want to their phones for $15 per month.

Rhapsody is following in the tracks of Napster, Apple's iTunes and Amazon.com, all of which have introduced MP3 downloads and moved away from digital rights management, or DRM, which prevents copying and piracy, but also makes it difficult to legally move music between devices.

Songs downloaded through the new $15 unlimited service on Verizon phones will still come with DRM. The process requires users to connect their phones to a Windows PC running Rhapsody's software. At present there is no Macintosh version.
